Mamadou, i grew up in Rompin. My father worked for Eastern Stevedoring and Rompin mining co. We left when the mines closed. The first house was in Tanjong Tengku, very near the Iron Ore staging area. The last hoise was S13, nest the Dresser Stevens house and very close to the school, Lanjut English school. I still have some old school stuff, pictures on file and a video of the lighters being loaded among others. From a Malaysian documentary of that time. FYI, Mr
Harvey, the Scool teaxher and Headmaster is doing well in Australia. Last saw him in 2007 in Lanjut. About 6 of us gathered to visit along with some of the Australian folks who worked there. More later if you interested. Thank you

I have been commissioned to write a book about philanthropist Stanley Herbert Smith who bought mines in Malaysia after World War II. Would you by any chance have any information about Smith or his company Eastern Mining? His partner was John A.T. Galvin.”
There is also mention of a RompinCo documentary film showing how the mine was developed. Have you ever had any luck find this film ?
I ma happy if you pass my e-mial address onto Susan.
Take care.

Hi Mamadou
Its me Lan. Where are you based? In KL? Here is the thing. I want to invite you as one of my guest-contributing something to my blog, e.g what do you think of Sabah in terms of how it is actually accessible to budget travelers… what do you miss about Sabah or anything that is related to your experiences in Sabah. It can be a short or lengthy entry, it will be up to you. If you don’t have to time to write an entry/article…will it be good enough if I send you some Questions and you answered em’ according to your belief and from your heart? It will be an interesting entry. Will credit your name of course and some good goodies ship to you anywhere you are in this world. If you agree, I will send to you a formal invitation. I badly need to read what others are thinking about Sabah. This way The Sabah Tourism Office will be in for a surprise to know that someone from the common society is actually speaking up to tell which things need improvement. The readers will love it too and certainly will be linked to your work.
My email is curiostraveller@gmail.com. Hoping to somehow ‘work’ with you. I love having people contributing their thoughts about Sabah, in my blog.
Cheers, Lan curiostraveller.com

Dear Mamadou,
In looking through then posts on your site I came across a post by Mr. Joe Lister in June 6, 2014 at 9:09 am regarding a visit to Bukit Ibam in 1967 as a Boy Scout. I do remember that and think these Scots came from the British Airforce (RAF) Base in Singapore. I was a member of the Cubs (younger Scouts) in the Bukit Ibam trop. We went on an exchange visit to Singapore after the visit of Mr. Lister and friends.
Now, Mr. Lister made mention of RompinCo documentary film showing how the mine was developed. I had seen this film at the Company Resthouse in Bukit Ibam. I repeat Mr. Lister’s request regarding the existence of a copy. If anybody out there knows I would be extremely appreciative. I would really love to find a copy.
Many thanks.
Glenn Schumacher, (Son of Butch and Betty Schumacher).

Mamadou, Greetings from New Zealand. Quite some time ago I wrote in regard to your article and expose on Bukit Ibam in Pahang mentioning I was the son of the Mechanical Superintendant Tim Hanlon (1961-1965) and fell ill shortly after: Now I have found photos of the mine, and the workshop staff in case anyone is interested in seeing if they, (or their fathers) were in the photo.
Apologies to Trevor Hislop, I don’t recall him so I assume he came after Tim Hanlon left? Anyway if you are interested send me an address and I will send you photos from Bukit Ibam taken between 1961-1965. Lester Temjuin Hanlon

Amazing indeed; my friend Sekou has a cousin at UM. Good news from him that Sekou is now an imam in Zaire, but the mosque is not identified yet. What is more amazing is that he has take a new wife – his cousin’s auntie from his mother’s side. So that means Sekou is now a prosperous person by their standard.
