The new Masjid India Bandar Kuching which is literally on Sungai Sarawak at Jalan Gambier was officially opened on 1 March 2019 by the Head of State (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud. The mosque has an architectural and design of Turkish and Middle-Eastern in concept.
Formerly known as Masjid India, the mosque is more modern and has innovative features.
A part of an initiative to develop the waterfront, the new RM10.6-million is the result of efforts of the state government, non-governmental associations and donations from citizens.
Construction on the RM 22 million new Masjid India, dubbed the floating mosque, began in September 2014. With a capacity of 1,600 people, the mosque replaces the old mosque located at India Street of over 160 years old
After the launch of the new mosque, the old Masjid India will serve as a Madrasah (Arabic for Education Institute) and a place for acquiring Islamic knowledge.
